Government Jobs for Widows and Divorced Women: Age Limits and Where You Can Apply (2026)

Widows, divorced women and judicially separated women who have not remarried get a higher upper age limit for many government jobs — 35, 38 or 40 at central bodies, +5 years in Kerala. Which posts, which rules.

If you are a widow, divorced, or judicially separated from your husband and have not remarried, many government recruitments raise the upper age limit for you — in some cases from 27 to 35 or 40. It is one of the least-known rules in Indian recruitment, and it is printed in the notifications themselves.

This guide explains the rule as recruiting bodies actually write it, which posts it covers, and the places where it differs.

Who counts

The notifications use the same wording: "Widows / divorced women / women judicially separated from their husbands and who are not remarried." All three groups get the same relaxation. Remarriage ends it. You will usually be asked for proof at document verification — a death certificate, divorce decree or court order of separation.

The central rule: "up to 35 years", for Group C posts

At central recruiting bodies the relaxation is not a number of years added on. It is a fixed upper age:

Your category Upper age limit for Group C posts
General / EWS up to 35
OBC (at DSSSB and Delhi Police) up to 38
SC / ST up to 40

This is the rule in the SSC CGL 2026 notification (age-relaxation table, codes 12 and 13) and in DDA's recruitment advertisement. DSSSB and Delhi Police print the extra OBC tier of 38; SSC and DDA do not print an OBC figure, so the General limit of 35 applies there.

Because it is a fixed age, it helps most on posts with a low normal limit: a Group C post with a limit of 27 rises to 35 for you, not to 27 + 35.

It applies to Group C posts only

This is the catch most guides miss. The notifications place this relaxation under Group "C" posts. Group B posts in the same exam keep their normal limit.

Example — SSC CGL: Auditor, Accountant, Tax Assistant, UDC and Postal Assistant are Group C posts with a normal limit of 27, so for you the limit becomes 35. Assistant Section Officer, Inspector and the other Group B posts in the same exam stay at 30.

Posts where the relaxation applies (central and Delhi bodies)

From the notifications we have read, these Group C posts carry the widow/divorced relaxation:

Recruiting body Group C posts Normal limit (General) Your limit
SSC CGL Auditor, Accountant, Tax Assistant, UDC, Postal Assistant 27 35 (40 SC/ST)
DDA Junior Secretariat Assistant, Patwari, MTS, Mali, Surveyor, Stenographer Grade D 25–30 35 (40 SC/ST)
Delhi Police Head Constable (AWO/TPO) 27 35 (38 OBC, 40 SC/ST)
DSSSB LDC, Junior Assistant, Junior Stenographer, Laboratory Assistant, Canteen Attendant and other Group C posts 27–30 35 (38 OBC, 40 SC/ST)
Puducherry CHSL clerk posts; Group C posts in Puducherry CGL 30–32 35 (40 SC/ST)

SSC CHSL (LDC, Junior Secretariat Assistant, Data Entry Operator) prints the same rule — up to 35, or 40 for SC/ST — in its age-relaxation table. For other SSC exams, such as MTS, check that table in the notification you are applying under before you rely on it.

Kerala works differently: +5 years

Kerala PSC's general conditions give widows 5 extra years on top of the normal limit, rather than a fixed age. So a Kerala post with a limit of 36 becomes 41 for you — and your category relaxation (OBC, SC/ST) is added as well. This applies to Kerala PSC recruitments such as LDC, Last Grade Servants, Staff Nurse and Secretariat Assistant.

Other state commissions

State public service commissions write their own rules, and many have relaxations for widows that are not in the central table. If you are applying to a state exam, look for the words "widow" or "divorced" in its age-relaxation section. If the notification is silent, assume no relaxation.
