Government Jobs Age Limit 35 and 40: Posts You Can Still Apply For After 30

"Am I too old for a government job?" is one of the most common questions aspirants ask — and the honest answer is that it depends far more on which exams you look at than on your age.

Most big central exams cap General-category candidates at 27, 30 or 32. But many state commissions and specialist posts allow much more, and category relaxations are added on top. In our database:

• 182 posts have a General-category upper age limit of 30 or more
• 76 posts have a limit of 35 or more
• 41 posts have a limit of 40 or more

One detail that trips people up: an upper limit of 35 means you must not yet have turned 35 on the date the notification counts age from. If you are already 35 on that date, you need a post whose limit is 36 or more. Here is how the "age as on" date works.

These counts use the upper age limit printed in each official notification, before any relaxation. If you are OBC, add 3 years; SC/ST, add 5; PwBD, add 10 — see age relaxation in government jobs for the full rules.

Why state jobs are your best bet after 30

The pattern in the data is clear: the high age limits are concentrated in state recruitment. Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan subordinate services (Lekhpal, Junior Assistant, Patwari, VDO) go to 40. Telangana's Group I, II and IV services go to 44–46. State civil services in UP and Rajasthan (PCS, RAS) go to 40. Unless a post is marked "domicile only", candidates from other states can apply — though usually without that state's category relaxations, so they compete at the General-category limit.

Central options above 35 are fewer, but they exist — teaching posts at KVS, NVS and Eklavya Model Residential Schools, some UPSC selection posts, and railway school teachers.

Three things that matter more than the headline age

1. The "as on" date. Your age is counted on a date fixed by the notification. If you turn 36 a week after that date, you are 35 for that cycle.
2. Attempts. Some exams also limit the number of attempts (UPSC Civil Services allows 6 for General). Age is not the only clock.
3. Your category and service. Ex-servicemen, central government employees, widows and PwBD candidates get some of the largest relaxations — in some cases 10 to 15 years.
